Creative Kids Design Canberra Workshop

Make a clay seed-pod and watch the flowers grow in your garden!
We will make a hollow form, a container for the seeds. When dry and placed outside in the garden, the whole family can watch and monitor as the weather goes to work on the clay. How long will it take for the clay to decompose and the seeds sprout? Maybe you could document the process?

Exhibition: of soap and stone

  • Google Calendar ICS

OPENING EVENT: Wednesday 17 August from 6:00pm at ANCA Gallery. Free to attend, no bookings required.

of soap and stone brings together the work of 3 early career artists; Kati Gorgenyi, Fran Romano and Melinda Brouwer. Working across mixed-media sculpture and ceramics, they have created an immersive and reflective experience which engages with notions of remembrance, memorialisation and the ephemerality of life. Kati investigates loss and memory; Fran explores the rituals and ephemera surrounding death, and Melinda’s interest lies in death’s material nature.

The exhibition experience will be enhanced by an interactive public program. On weekends, artists will encourage gallery visitors to engage with the artworks and themes by making clay votives. These offerings will become part of the exhibition, developing into an ephemeral installation which will remain in the gallery courtyard to decompose. The installation will be documented using time-lapse photography by videographer, Caroline Huff.

Exhibition : VESSEL

An exhibition that applauds the work of the Canberra region’s ceramic artists through a celebration of the vessel. Ceramic artists responded to the following definitions:

Vessel: A container (for example but not limited to a cask, bottle, kettle, cup, vase, or bowl) for holding something.

This collection epitomises the essence of good design, aesthetics and functionality in their work. The survey demonstrates the diversity of practice and approach to the vessel, where the artworks connect us to the maker, each made with the artist’s hand and then held within our own.

The Benefit of Doubt - a Digital Residency & Experimental Project

  • Google Calendar ICS

Over the 6 weeks of this experimental project, with friend and fellow artist Zoe Slee, we will explore the creative process and how self-doubt, self-image, and related biases impact and inform our practices in different cities.

Using the MaySpace Online Project Space, we will explore these concepts through an ongoing dialogue via a series of weekly postcards to each other posted on their website.

We invite others to join in the discussion, and hope hope that the project will engage with the community, creating a platform for broader dialogue, and helping to demystify the internal workings of artists as they create.

You can follow along by signing up for updates and/or join the conversation.

Look out also for 2 live Q & A sessions on the MaySpace Instagram page during the course of the project.

VESSEL - Online exhibition

An online group exhibition of Australian contemporary ceramic artists. Curated by MAY SPACE Online.

VESSEL: carrier // receptacle // holder

As one of the oldest and most ubiquitous mediums, VESSEL brings together a group of Australian artists to examine the role of contemporary ceramics in our society. Historically used as a means to contain, ceramics were items which would hold special objects — grains, spices, wine, rice, earth or ashes. Although their form and function has changed and expanded over time, ceramics have and continue to act as vessels; whether created to physically hold important goods, or as a symbolic repository of memory, imbued with an inherent source of comfort for the possessor.

The contributing artists for VESSEL are located and working across Australia, bringing together different methods, practices, and approaches to the ceramic medium.

memento mori - pop-up interactive shrine

Memento Mori, is an interactive art installation investigating themes of loss, longing and nostalgia and their intersection with concepts of ritual, memory and remembrance. The installation references burial practises and devotional rites throughout history and specifically draws inspiration from Ancient practises, such as burial mounds and catacombs.

By combining ceramic shards and objects with printed fragments and other found materials, this interactive work creates a type of shrine. Participants are encouraged to pause and reflect by making a clay votive or placing a virtual candle. The shrine will grow and develop throughout the course of the day.
